MM 19/20th Sept 1944 Escault Canal

M.M. London Gazette 1.3.45. Recommendation states 'On the night of 19-20 September 1944, 9 British Infantry Brigade made an assault crossing of the Escault Canal at Lille St. Hubert. A section of 9 British Field Ambulance, attached to 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, had established a CCP in the town about 1000 yards from the near bank of the canal. There was heavy mortaring and small arms fire from the right flank and the approach to the canal was swept by this fire, causing heavy casualties. Private Thomas showed great bravery and devotion to duty repeatedly going out into this area and collecting casualties back to the CCP. A number of casualties has occurred on the far bank of the canal also, and Private Thomas crossed the canal many times and ferried the casualties cross. His disregard for danger and his cool leadership were an example to the rest of his section.'
