Cpl Lindley is medical orderly to the Battalion.

During the whole of recent operations in Belgium and France he has carried out his duties with the utmost devotion, displaying complete disregard for his personal safety. He has cared for the wounded under heavy fire again and again and many a man owes his life to Cpl Lindley’s skill, courage and determination.

2nd Lieutenant Darby Hart

With the first streak of dawn numbers of the enemy were seen to be advancing westwards, evidently under the impression we had completely withdrawn. These were caught by the concentrated fire of our two forward companies, B & D, and few of them survived. From then onwards the fun became fast and furious. The Germans soon had his mortars and artillery in action against us, and as the day wore on the intensity increased. This was widespread over the whole battalion area but the 4th Royal Berkshires and B & D companies came in for most of it. Light anti-tank guns fired upon any vehicle that was seen with tracer. A considerable number of enemy tanks were seen on the far side of the canal, and our artillery engaged these. Machine gun and artillery fire had become really intense around midday and the enemy was using all kinds of verey lights as signals. The 4th Royal Berkshires broke under the strain and withdrew in disorder. This break left a dangerous gap on D Company’s left flank. C Company, less one platoon, were ordered by Major Lowe to close the gap. They did this under the command of Major Boxer, with 2nd Lt Hart, OC 13 Pl and PSM James OC 14 Pl, sustaining 15 casualties in doing so. Lt Hart got the Military Cross, for this attack.
